FIN302: PERSONAL FINANCE

This course is an introductory course in corporate finance. It stresses the modern fundamentals of corporate financial decision making with special reference to investment, financing and financial markets. While building upon introductory courses in accounting, economics and quantitative analysis, the course develops distinctive conceptual frameworks and specialized tools for solving real world financial problems at both the individual and corporate level. The course is a blend of theory and practice. While diligent practice will make you competent in financial techniques, a good grasp of theory will help students think systematically about ways to solve a problem for which no existing technique is suitable or available. Particular emphasis is placed upon stock valuation, bond valuation, capital budgeting, and financial markets. These fundamentals of finance are used in personal money management and in decision-making by business firms. The main topics to be covered in this course are (i) discount cash flow framework (ii) stock valuation and bond valuation (iii) capital budgeting analysis (iv) risk, return, and the market (v) raising capital. We will discuss the latest financial news and headlines including global financial news, economic policies that are relevant to this course  at various times in the second half of the semester. Only through a genuine understanding of current and past events are we able to look forward with perspective, better preparing us for what may or may not happen.  At the end of the semester, one guest speaker from industry will be invited to deliver on-site talks. The intention of the invited talk is to provide students exposure to the most current focus of financial practitioners.

FIN459: FINANCIAL MODELING IN PYTHON

(course introduction)

The primary objective of this course is to “marry” FIN352 Investment Management and FIN359 Quantitative Finance with practice and provide you with the skillsets required to create and capture value as financial decision-makers. You should develop the ability to use finance concepts to solve practical finance problems.  The course emphasizes the development of practical insights rather than theoretical frameworks. We will augment and refine the analytical tools covered in investment and corporate finance and learn how to apply value-based management modeling techniques to a broad set of business decisions.  We will further explore a number of concepts, including stock valuation, fixed income securities, risk and return, capital budgeting, and portfolio analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, etc.  This course will be implemented in Python & JupyterNotebook (or Jupyter Lab) environment. Therefore, in addition to learning and applying finance concepts, you will also improve and refine your computer skills.  This course takes a general management perspective on finance, focusing on the activities chief financial officers perform. It intends to expose you to what these activities are, to engage you in rich discussions about the key considerations behind fundamental choices financial managers face, to teach you financial decision-making processes that firms often use, and to hone your financial judgment abilities. Each semester, 1-2 guest speakers from industry will be invited to deliver on-site talks. The intention of the invited talks is to provide students exposure to the most current focus of financial practitioners.
